A statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) said the shutdown is necessary to allow engineers to undertake urgent repairs on the transmission pipeline serving the treatment plant.

According to the company, the repair works are essential to protect the integrity of the transmission pipeline and ensure its continued reliable operation.

The statement indicated that the Barekese Water Treatment Plant will be shut down from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

As a result, water production and supply to Kumasi and surrounding communities are expected to be affected during the period.

Ghana Water Limited has therefore advised residents, institutions, and businesses within the affected areas to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the shutdown to mitigate the impact of the temporary disruption.

The company expressed regret for any inconvenience the exercise may cause and appealed to customers for patience and cooperation.

Management further assured the public that water production and distribution would resume immediately after the completion of the repair works.

The maintenance exercise, GWL noted, forms part of efforts to improve the reliability and sustainability of water supply services in the Ashanti Region.

Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has disclosed that he never thought about taking up the role.

The experienced attacker was officially named the substantive captain of the Black Stars in 2025, succeeding his elder brother, André Ayew.

Since his appointment, he has led by example, playing a key role in the national team’s qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he contributed the most goals and the most assists.

Speaking on the GFA Podcast Beyond the Whistle, Jordan Ayew opened up on the role as captain, indicating that he never planned for it.

“These things of leading, being captain, these are not my things. I’m not. For me, because I’m a big believer in what you deserve, you always get so I always give everything to God. It is not even something I was thinking about,” the striker said.

Ayew further revealed, “One time CK Akonnor came to London when he was coach and asked me if I would mind being assistant captain to my brother, and I told him no because at that time I didn’t feel it was needed. Because I feel like you don't need to wear the armband to be captain. As a senior player, if I have something to say, I can still say it.”

The Sports Ministry has made efforts to convince Crystal Palace forward Eddie Nketiah to represent Ghana, according to his father, Edward Nketiah Snr.

Speaking on Joy Prime TV, Nketiah Snr confirmed that contact has been made with the 26-year-old striker as speculation over a potential switch to the Black Stars continues.

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has insisted that it would be a mistake to dismiss Ghana’s chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The suspension follows widespread public concern after KATH announced on June 3, 2026 that its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre had reached full capacity and would no longer admit new emergency cases. The announcement triggered national debate about the state of emergency healthcare delivery at one of Ghana’s largest referral hospitals and prompted intervention from both the Ministry of Health and the Presidency.

In a letter addressed to the hospital’s Board, the Minister stated that the suspension was being carried out pursuant to Section 36(1) of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 526).

According to Mr. Akandoh, the Chief Executive Officer admitted during a meeting with him on June 4, 2026 that the decision to announce the suspension of emergency admissions was contrary to directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.

“The Chief Executive admitted before me on Wednesday June 4, 2026 that he acted contrary to the clear directives of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana by that said announcement,” the Minister stated in the letter.

The Health Minister further directed that the CEO remain on suspension for two weeks and report directly to him upon the expiration of the period.

The meeting at which the CEO made the admission was attended by the Chief Director, Technical Advisor and Legal Advisor of the Ministry of Health.

Beyond the suspension of the CEO, the Minister has ordered a thorough investigation into comments made by the Head of Public Affairs Unit of KATH during an interview with Channel One Newsroom regarding the suspension of emergency admissions.

Mr. Akandoh indicated that the spokesperson’s comments were also contrary to directives issued by the President and has therefore requested the Board to determine the circumstances under which the interview was granted.

The Board has specifically been tasked to establish whether the Public Affairs Officer acted on his own authority or with the approval of hospital management.

“I am also respectfully requesting you to undertake a thorough investigation to establish on what authority he made those comments on Channel One Newsroom. Further whether it was a management decision for him to grant the said interview. Where necessary the appropriate sanctions should be applied,” the Minister directed.

The Minister has given the Board two weeks to complete its investigations and submit a report on its findings.

The development marks the latest twist in the controversy surrounding the temporary closure of KATH’s Accident and Emergency Centre to new admissions, a decision that generated public concern due to the hospital’s critical role as a major referral centre serving the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North and parts of the Northern regions.
