Residents of the Kumasi Metropolitan Area a_nd several adjoining communities are expected to experience interruptions in water supply from Tuesday, June 9, to Thursday, June 11, 2026, following the temporary shutdown of the Barekese Water Treatment Plant for critical maintenance works.

A statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) said the shutdown is necessary to allow engineers to undertake urgent repairs on the transmission pipeline serving the treatment plant.

According to the company, the repair works are essential to protect the integrity of the transmission pipeline and ensure its continued reliable operation.

The statement indicated that the Barekese Water Treatment Plant will be shut down from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

As a result, water production and supply to Kumasi and surrounding communities are expected to be affected during the period.

Ghana Water Limited has therefore advised residents, institutions, and businesses within the affected areas to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the shutdown to mitigate the impact of the temporary disruption.

The company expressed regret for any inconvenience the exercise may cause and appealed to customers for patience and cooperation.

Management further assured the public that water production and distribution would resume immediately after the completion of the repair works.

The maintenance exercise, GWL noted, forms part of efforts to improve the reliability and sustainability of water supply services in the Ashanti Region.

Edward Nketiah Snr has revealed that he has lost count of the number of times he has been asked whether his son, Eddie Nketiah, will one day play for Ghana.

The father of the Crystal Palace forward says questions about a possible switch to the Black Stars have followed him for years, reflecting the continued interest among Ghanaian football fans in seeing the striker represent his ancestral homeland.

“Listen, I've had that question about 500 times, and it's a question that he has to answer,” Nketiah Snr said during an interview on Joy Prime TV.

While acknowledging the family's strong Ghanaian roots, he stressed that the 26-year-old is old enough to make his own choice regarding his international future.

“You have a kid of dual nationality, I'll put it that way. We're Ghanaian, of course, so he loves Ghana, but he was also brought up there [in the UK]. As you know as well, he's been through the English system and he's of age. But, you know, I leave that to him. I do the fatherly duties.”

Nketiah came through England’s youth ranks and remains the country's all-time leading scorer at Under-21 level with 16 goals. He later earned a senior England cap in a friendly against Australia in 2023.

Because that appearance came in a non-competitive match, FIFA regulations still allow him to switch allegiance and represent Ghana if he chooses to do so.

Speculation over a potential move to the Black Stars has intensified in recent years, particularly after the striker fell out of England's senior squad picture. Reports have suggested that both Ghana and the player's representatives remain open to discussions.

However, any potential progress has reportedly been slowed by the hamstring injury Nketiah suffered towards the end of the 2025/26 season.

Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.

As part of activities to commemorate Mental Health Awareness Day and Mother’s Day, MomsConnectGH last Saturday organised a donation drive to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital under its outreach initiative, The Hannah Project.

The initiative formed part of the organisation’s broader commitment to supporting vulnerable groups in society while creating awareness around mental health challenges, particularly those affecting women and mothers.

The donation included essential supplies and welfare items for patients at the hospital.

Speaking during the donation, Co-Partner of MomsConnectGH, Elizabeth Owusu-Boadi, said the initiative was inspired by the need to show compassion and support to people facing mental health challenges, especially women and mothers.

She noted that many women continue to struggle silently with mental health conditions such as postpartum depression.

“Postpartum depression is one of the mental health issues many women go through, yet it is not spoken about enough. Many mothers suffer in silence because of stigma, lack of awareness, and limited support systems,” she said.

Mrs Owusu-Boadi explained that the decision to visit the Accra Psychiatric Hospital was intentional and aimed at reminding patients that they are loved, valued, and not forgotten.

“We wanted to come here not just with donations, but with kindness, hope, and support for the patients and staff here,” she added.

She also called on the government, civil society organisations, and private institutions to increase support for psychiatric healthcare facilities across the country.

“Mental healthcare is just as important as physical healthcare. We all have a role to play in supporting mental health institutions and creating more awareness around these issues,” she stated.

Head of Public Relations at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Peggy Asiedu Ekremet, thanked MomsConnectGH for the gesture and encouraged the public to pay more attention to mental health.

“Mental health issues can affect anyone. Seeking help is a sign of strength and not weakness. We encourage people to speak up and seek professional support when they need it,” she said.

MomsConnectGH said The Hannah Project forms part of its broader mission to build a supportive community for mothers while impacting lives positively through outreach and wellness initiatives.

The group also expressed appreciation to all individuals, partners, and organisations who contributed to the success of the donation exercise.

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has directed the Board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer for two weeks with immediate effect over the controversial announcement that temporarily halted admissions of new emergency cases at the facility.

The suspension follows widespread public concern after KATH announced on June 3, 2026 that its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre had reached full capacity and would no longer admit new emergency cases. The announcement triggered national debate about the state of emergency healthcare delivery at one of Ghana’s largest referral hospitals and prompted intervention from both the Ministry of Health and the Presidency.

In a letter addressed to the hospital’s Board, the Minister stated that the suspension was being carried out pursuant to Section 36(1) of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 526).

According to Mr. Akandoh, the Chief Executive Officer admitted during a meeting with him on June 4, 2026 that the decision to announce the suspension of emergency admissions was contrary to directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.

“The Chief Executive admitted before me on Wednesday June 4, 2026 that he acted contrary to the clear directives of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana by that said announcement,” the Minister stated in the letter.

The Health Minister further directed that the CEO remain on suspension for two weeks and report directly to him upon the expiration of the period.

The meeting at which the CEO made the admission was attended by the Chief Director, Technical Advisor and Legal Advisor of the Ministry of Health.

Beyond the suspension of the CEO, the Minister has ordered a thorough investigation into comments made by the Head of Public Affairs Unit of KATH during an interview with Channel One Newsroom regarding the suspension of emergency admissions.

Mr. Akandoh indicated that the spokesperson’s comments were also contrary to directives issued by the President and has therefore requested the Board to determine the circumstances under which the interview was granted.

The Board has specifically been tasked to establish whether the Public Affairs Officer acted on his own authority or with the approval of hospital management.

“I am also respectfully requesting you to undertake a thorough investigation to establish on what authority he made those comments on Channel One Newsroom. Further whether it was a management decision for him to grant the said interview. Where necessary the appropriate sanctions should be applied,” the Minister directed.

The Minister has given the Board two weeks to complete its investigations and submit a report on its findings.

The development marks the latest twist in the controversy surrounding the temporary closure of KATH’s Accident and Emergency Centre to new admissions, a decision that generated public concern due to the hospital’s critical role as a major referral centre serving the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North and parts of the Northern regions.
